Your work is finished. You’ve completed the last section and run the spellchecker, and you’re about to hand it over. But wait…
There are several reasons why it’s a good idea to have your work copyedited, and here are some of them:
- Your work has several authors, and the style and word usage vary depending on which author wrote which section.
- Copyediting will ensure that the style and word usage are uniform throughout.
- English isn’t your first language, and you’ve used a language course or a machine translator to help you with your work.
- Copyediting will spot places where the word choice needs to be altered to match current usage, or the machine translation appears to have misinterpreted the original text.
- You’ve used generative AI to produce some sections of the text.
- Copyediting will identify where the terms used by the AI tool are unsuitable in the context because of the material used to train the AI tool.
After it’s been copyedited, your work should be discussed on social media because of its content and insights, not because of some avoidable error that someone’s noticed!
